Lorem Ipsum has been the industry’s standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum

New Residency Programme Announced

The Malta government on Friday has announced a NEW residency programme for Non EU which added to the other successful programmes continues to make Malta a leader in the global markets.

Says Bernard Cassar, Malta Honorary Consul in South Africa, “Unlike other European countries competing for the South African market, the lucrative property market in Malta is supported by strong business activities in the Tourism (especially the UK markets), Financial Services, iGaming sectors, as well as Aviation and Boating registrations – a safe bet, especially for South Africans.”
The added New Programme gives South Africans more options for investing in brick and mortar in Euros, either for investment only purposes or Plan B. There is no annual tax payable, a once-off government residency fee of € 30,000 (this includes an application fee of €5,500). A €250,000 government investment is payable and refundable after 5 years. The property purchase minimum is €320,000 in main centres (or €270,000 in other specified areas), or a rental property at a minimum cost of €12,000 per annum (or €10,000 pa in the South of Malta or sister island Gozo).

Included in the residency are financially dependent relatives (spouse, children, parents and grandparents). Permanent Residency includes the full Schengen visa which after 5 years annual review will be renewable every 5 years thereafter. Applicants should have a minimum capital of €500,000 which can include the Malta property purchase or an annual worldwide income of €100,000. The above may only be applied through approved agents or accredited persons.

Merle Whale, a South African living in Malta says, “There is an active SA community here and I often hear them comment that the lifestyle in Malta is wonderful – much safer, the infrastructure is good – and there are no council rates, and utilities are good value for money. Its an excellent option for us, and I’ll gladly show you the ropes”. Another great advantage is that Malta is well connected globally, with over 45 flights a day. Major airlines with flexible routes for South Africans include Lufthansa, Emirates and British Airways. This, together with the Schengen visa, is a gateway to Europe with good routes at competitive prices!

We will be hosting free information sessions in October in Johannesburg and Cape Town, as well as private consultations on a reservation basis.

Affordable Malta – Retire – Live

Retire to affordable Malta, idyllic Mediterranean island in the sun.

The beautiful archipelago of Malta is an affordable retirement destination option for an increasing number of discerning South Africans.  Sunny Malta sparkles like a gem in the midst of the Mediterranean Sea, its convenient location giving easy access to Europe’s major cities.

Ask any expat what attracted them to the Maltese lifestyle, and like me, you’re likely to hear the same common answers:  fantastic weather with lots of healthy outdoor activities, an abundance of fresh fish, fruit, veggies and good wine, world-class health care, low taxes, an excellent educational system and reliable utilities services. All of this, in addition to the fact that the cost of living here is very reasonable, compared with most other European countries.

As I walk through fields of verdant clover and colourful wild flowers, or thread my way through ancient narrow streets, the sound of the ocean reaches me –waves, beating against rocks; or gently lapping sun-drenched shores.  As I sip my macchiato at a pavement café, or shop for fresh produce at market stalls, the industrious locals cheerfully greet me by name and we stop for a chat. It hasn’t taken me long to feel very much at home, here in Malta.

After a couple of holiday visits, the decision to move my life to Malta from South Africa, was a simple one to take, as the country has so much to offer. As a newbie, I was welcomed with genuine warmth by the kindly, helpful Maltese, and communication posed no problem, as everyone here speaks English.

After deciding to settle in Malta, I opted to rent an apartment for a while first, before buying.  This gave me time to find my feet and investigate the property market in all the different localities of Malta. There are plenty of flats and houses to rent, mostly furnished, at reasonable prices. I finally decided to make the city of Sliema my permanent home.  A hive of activity, Sliema ticked all my boxes – good shopping, a plethora of restaurants, seafront walks and a great night life.

Of the three main islands that make up the Maltese archipelago, Gozo is the most popular retreat for retired folk. Its pastoral landscape and tranquil atmosphere all contribute to an enviable ‘laid back’ lifestyle. Yet Gozo is just a short ferry ride away from the bustling capital city of Valletta, and easily accessible to Malta’s international airport.

Gozo is also a water sport playground, renowned for being one of the top diving destinations in the Mediterranean. Its impressive range of shore and boat dives –including reefs, caves, wrecks and tunnel dives – ensures every dive is a memorable one. Gozo’s glorious beaches are surrounded by some of the most pristine waters in the Mediterranean; perfect for swimming, snorkelling, or simply lazing in the sun.

There are a variety of property styles on offer in Gozo, ranging from renovated old village farmhouses, to contemporary style properties, as well as simple but comfortable accommodation. Many homes have stunning views of the island and sea. Current property prices on Gozo island range from €70,000 for a one bedroom apartment, to around €330,000 for a fully restored authentic farmhouse with three double bedrooms and pool.

Gozo boasts some of the best eateries in Malta, with a vast variety of local traditional foods and good wines on offer – all at a reasonable cost. In fact Gozo has the lowest cost of living in Malta. A bus ticket for the day is just over $1—and only 50 cents for residents over 60. A round trip on the ferry costs $5 for visitors, $2 for permanent residents, and its free for senior residents. Grocery costs are reasonable too, with milk and bread under $1, eggs about $2, and a mid-range bottle of wine at about $6. Expats report living expenses here of between $1,800 and $2,400 a month, depending on their lifestyle.

Sounds like the perfect spot to retire, don’t you think?

Do contact me if you need any further information on retiring to Malta. As an expat from South Africa, I know the ropes and have made all the right connections which will enable me to assist other South Africans who are considering moving to Malta.

I will be visiting South Africa in October this year and would love to meet up with you to advise and assist you in whatever way I can.

With love from sunny Malta!

Malta – My Mediterranean Island home!

So here I am, a South African expat, happily living a comfortable new lifestyle in Sliema, Malta’s most vibrant city for shopping, fine dining and water sports (www.sliema-malta.com).  Of course, the fact that most of the charming locals speak English, has been a huge help. The weather is fabulous too – typically Mediterranean – mild winters and hot, sun-drenched summers.

Now that I know the ropes and have established all the right connections, I am in a position to assist other South Africans to make the move to Malta, easily and painlessly.

With my help, many of my family, friends and acquaintances already have, or are seriously considering, making the move to magical Malta too.  Some are investing in the lucrative, strong property market here, while others are exploring various business and employment opportunities.  Then, there are those who simply seek a tranquil retirement haven, or holiday home, in the sun.

Malta’s alluring attributes are endless, giving it the enviable reputation for being one of the best places to live in the world – for people of all ages. The country is relatively crime-free and politically stable, with a thriving economy, advantageous tax structure and world-class health system. The Maltese also take pride in their excellent education facilities. The legendary University of Malta  (www.um.edu.mt) can trace its origins all the way back to 1592. There are some 11,500 students in attendance including 750 international students from 82 different countries.

The scenic Maltese archipelago lies virtually at the centre of the Mediterranean Sea, 93 km south of the Italian island of Sicily. Its convenient location makes Malta an ideal gateway to Europe, for holidays or business travellers.

So, why not make Malta your next holiday destination? You could take the opportunity to investigate its myriad opportunities on offer. We could arrange to meet when I visit South Africa again in October this year.

Looking forward to hearing from you soon!
